If you have been reading the website, I live in the lowest grade for this position, GS-6 area. It’s only 10-miles away from GS-7 territory. The job of an FS GS-6 is exactly the same as FS GS-7. Same recruitment bulletins, same difficulty, same position. It’s not because of tech skills or business skills. Performance reviews can be stellar, but because you live in a rural part of the state, they can take advantage of you by treating you with limited promotion opportunities – even for remote work. This is an equal pay grade for equal work issue. Women make-up 95% of lower grade positions.
Here’s the census data of demographics and geography of the Three Pay-Grades.
Geography is important because it is possible management wanted to lower the salaries of certain areas to lower the cost of acquisition to pay for driving expenses. The problem with this is it gives lower opportunities to rural workers in order to lower the business costs. There are many problems with this thinking. Can you use salary to pay for the cost-of-doing business. However, that’s not my issue. My issue is my demographics (hard-to-count) and geography is identical to other GS-7 areas. And because of those factors. 7354 should be categorized as the higher GS-7 position.
